Jennifer & Chris, whom you may remember from their winery portrait session, held their backyard vineyard wedding at the home of a family member which overlooks a vineyard and the mountains. Wine and winery and the natural landscape of the California mountains are all huge parts of their life together, so the setting felt absolutely true to them and everyone who knows them.
The day was simple and loving and intimate, full of elegance and, of course, tons and tons of fantastic California wines.
Most memorable moment from your wedding day?
Jennifer – I started to get emotional at the top of the stairs standing there with my dad, before we even started down the aisle, and I looked at him and he looked frantically back at me and said “Oh no, don’t start up yet!” And so I looked away and started thinking of something that I knew would make me cut the tears… and my dad, thinking quickly, said, “Just think of fishing trips!” And I said “Oh my god dad, that’s so funny, that’s just what I’m thinking of!” And instantly we were both cracking up. Chris – Looking at the ground, waiting for Jennifer to appear, and then looking up and seeing how beautifully amazing she was.
Funniest moment on your wedding day?
Jennifer – Right as Chris and I started our first dance, I said to him “By the way, it’s the Etta James version.” It was a joke on him he loved and hated at the same time. We have never agreed on which is the better version of our song, “At Last”. I like the classic Etta James, and he likes the completely ripped off Beyoncé version. Chris – Derrick’s speech.
What were you most anxious or nervous about regarding your wedding day and how did it turn out?
Jennifer – The music. I didn’t get to spend near enough time on it and was working on it even as I had my hair and makeup done the day of the wedding. To me, music can make or break and event, so I was worried about it, but Liz, one of my bridesmaids later told me that she thought the music worked out perfectly. I was so relieved to hear that. Chris – The setup for the tables, chairs, dance floor, etc… and of course, trying to keep my emotions together when I first saw my wife. All in all, I did okay.
What advice would you give to other couples planning their wedding?
Chris – Don’t see your wife in her dress before she is walking down the isle. I didn’t and it enabled me to see my wife in her dress at the perfect moment and it made my heart drop! Jennifer – Stay focused on each other… the details don’t matter, just the two of you do.
If you could do it all over, would you change anything?
Chris – I’d get the bistro lights higher in the middle of the floor. Jennifer – I’d make sure “Canned Heat” played so that my bridesmaids and I could bust out the Napoleon Dynamite dance.
Any tips for future couples on how to prepare for their wedding photos?
Chris – Diet, diet, diet
Jennifer – Binge on burgers
