I have wanted to perform in a musical for a long while and this hit more to home. I spent 7 years playing in concert band, and four of those years I wanted to be involved in some sort of musical production. I know how they had felt, nervous, hoping they didn’t flub their lines. Once in a while you get approached to do something familiar, but this was on a different spectrum. I have shot a few concerts in my short days, but I have never shot a musical. It was a very different approach and experience. This was more laid back and I didn’t have to worry about a random mosher throw themselves at me. The lighting very was simple. There were no strobes to sync against, no drops of water from energetic drummers, just honest lighting.
I loved shooting this. The costumes where fantastically made, the parts where wonderfully cast. There wasn’t a hair out-of-place.
I think Molly explained it best “Being able to shoot the dress rehearsal was even better because we had the free reign of the entire place. No audience to worry about, nothing being thrown at me for being in the way, no stray purses to trip over. Just us, the cameras and the performers.”
Just good old-fashioned finny fun.
