Hitting the Streets

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Atlanta. My mother worked down town and used public transportation for a good number of years during my childhood. She often worked weekends and I got to go with her. As a child this was the coolest thing in the history of EVER!!! We would park at one of the MARTA train stations and hop aboard. I can vividly remember being fascinated with the people in the city. They were all so very different, yet coexisting pretty harmoniously. Young and old, rich and poor, quiet and loud, natural and industrial…it’s all there to be had! I always thought that I would move out and head straight for the city life. Of course, I got older and realized that the allure wasn’t as strong once I was seeing things through adult eyes. However, the city still fascinates me.

I have always enjoyed looking at Street Photography and, with some urging, decided to give it a shot (pun intended). I must preface this post with this: I much prefer black and white for this! Why? I think it’s because, for me at least, it like book vs. movie. In the movie you are told what so see. You only “see” what is captured in the frame and never give a second thought to what’s going on behind the camera man. In the book, that’s 100% up to your own imagination. Every reader sees a different version of the same character and your imagination naturally pictures the entire setting rather than just what that character is looking at. Color can be distracting, whereas black and white leaves room for interpretation while guiding the eye to the purpose of a shot. So without further ado…….

The only limits to one’s imagination are those which are self-imposed.
