Search the internet for any amount of time and you’ll find thousands, if not millions, of articles and lists of what to ask a wedding photographer when you’re looking to hire one. Honestly, a lot of those questions and even whole lists can be thrown right out the window. What matters is that you like their work, you like them as a person, and that you two connect on your vision of your wedding day. Figuring this out can feel daunting, though, and it’ll take some research and a lot of trusting your gut.

Wedding vendor directories are a fantastic place to start. Blogs like A Practical Wedding, Offbeat Bride, Catalyst Wedding Co, Love List Inc, and Bridechilla are all reputable and amazing wedding blogs that have really fantastic and well-organized wedding vendor directories, especially when it comes to wedding photographers. You can also ask around: friends, family members, or your wedding planner might have some people they love working with.

TIP: Pay attention to the people the writers love on those blogs and the names you keep seeing pop up again and again!

Keep track of to the types of photography and art that speak to you {even if it’s not wedding photography!}. Do you prefer bright and colorful or light and airy or dark and moody? Fun or serious? A mix of all of these? What feels right for your love and for you as a couple?

Now might be a good time to narrow down by either creating a wedding photography pinboard on Pinterest or even just a list of descriptors you’d use when talking about the art that resonates with you. Make sure to include aspects that you love and aspects that you don’t like as much so you can get laser-focused on what your style is. {For example, there are lots of types of photography that I love and think are great but just wouldn’t be my style if I were looking for photos OF me and my partner.}

TIP: You can always hire a photographer for an engagement session as a sort of trial run! See if you mesh, see if you like the work you make together.

Find out who the photographers are as people and make sure you enjoy their vibe. You will be spending a lot of your wedding day time together, so you’ll want to WANT to have them around. Is it important for you to find a wedding photographer who is eco-friendly? Someone who supports the LGBTQ+ community? Is an intersectional feminist? Someone who is queer themselves?

See if you can get a quick sense of how they’ll be on the wedding day: calm or energized or a little of both? Someone who can think on their feet when challenges {inevitably} come up? Someone who helps you every step of the way, even with things that are way outside the realm of photography?

TIP: Their social media is a great and quick place to get a sense of their voice and general personality!
