Intern Hannah: Film Fashion Shoot at a Barn

If there’s one thing that makes you grow as an artist, it’s getting out of your comfort zone.

For me, that means a lot of different things, but one of the biggest things is photographing guys. Since I started my photo classes, I’ve just been drawn to photographing women. Makes sense, because I am one. I’ve shot with a few guys before, but my style tends to attract more female clients, and so my portfolio has ended up with a severe dearth of males. This starts a cycle… More women are drawn to my female-heavy portfolio, and more guys tend to shy away.

Anyway, I thought it was time to start pushing myself and rounding out my portfolio, so I called on an excellent male model I’d been in contact with to do a shoot.

This worked out well, as Max was looking to add some more film work to his portfolio, and he got to rock a more “rustic” look than his usual polished, sophisticated work. To make things even more interesting, I decided to throw some off camera lighting into the mix, to give a slight edge to the dreamy, nostalgic qualities of the film.It was also a bit different for me shooting with more of a fashion mindset. I like to bring a little bit of a fashiony vibe to my portraiture anyway, but it is a bit different. You have to think a lot about how you are portraying the clothes, both how they look and the “vibe” they should be marketed under.

I had a lot of fun working with Max, and it was really great for me to work on a project that was a little bit different!
