I’ll be honest: I don’t shoot a lot of family portraits. I tend to gravitate more toward weddings and individual portraits. However, the Parhams are a very special family; we’ve known each other for quite some time. I even used to sit for Lila Grace and Claire when they were younger. So, when Mr. Parham approached me about doing some family portraits with their puppies, which I got to help deliver, I couldn’t have been more excited.
Puppies grow up FAST. Remember these guys? They’re 6 weeks old now, and considerably more mobile and energetic.
While taking pictures of puppies is absolutely adorable and possibly even a little bit therapeutic, here’s some tips for all of you who are thinking it’s just a walk in the park.
1. Puppies like to chew on everything. Including the shoes on your feet, your camera bag, and possibly even your camera, if you’ll let them.
2. Puppies are under the impression that they can run under your feet and nothing bad will happen. It is completely up to you to avoid stepping on them.
3. Puppies are very good at adorable candids. They are not so good at posing (but that’s okay).
Despite these (admittedly adorable) challenges, we managed to get a few lovely family portraits, and a lot of fun shots of the puppies just being puppies.
