Intern Hannah: Retro Styled Senior Portraits

Ahh… senior portraits. The term brings to mind a really cheesy portrait studio, where they dress you in (just the top half of) a black dress or suit for your headshots. After the formal ones, it gets worse… my senior portrait experience involved a faux fur and a wilted-looking plastic rose. No, really. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you were a luckier high school senior than I was.)

The worst part is, everyone in school had the same ones done, as we were required to go there for our yearbook photo, so there was no chance you were going to come out with something unique and original. No wonder seniors are seeking out independent photographers to capture this important time in their lives; they’re individuals, and those photos just can’t capture that in the way that they want.

To illustrate my point: meet Ginny.

Ginny is graduating this June from my high school alma mater, Eastside. She’s headed to High Point University to study theater, and she is a talented and ambitious young woman who has participated in many plays and even organized and directed a production of “A Very Potter Musical” here in Greenville. Not bad for a high schooler, huh?

Ginny and I set out to create this styled shoot to show off her love of the dramatic arts as well as her affinity for all things vintage. We wanted to draw on some of that “Old Hollywood” glamour, so we headed to a playhouse to create these senior portraits!

First up, makeup…

Ginny wants to specialize in costuming, so we made sure to check out the costume shop while we were at the theater!

Finally, it was time to hit the stage.

And, of course, every actress needs a killer headshot:

Together, Ginny and I were able to capture her personality and interests during her senior portraits - no more “stock” images for this young lady! I am so thrilled to have been part of this experience with her, and I can’t wait to see where her college years take her. Good luck, Ginny!
