I remember when I got my first camera I wanted to stay as far away from people pictures as I could. When I began attending the Art Institute of Atlanta in 2008 and didn’t know what kind of assignments I’d end up with but Studio was far from my favorite class to take. As an art student you’re usually told what to take and when it’s due so it was always hard for me to put myself in my work. In my final quarter at AiA I needed a General and Specialization portfolio to graduate and lucky me I had to have six portraits. I saved them till the last few weeks since I disliked portraits so much. This studio portrait would have to be my favorite of those as well as my favorite picture I have taken. Reason being is because I was able to do something I love for once without a teacher saying that’s not good enough.
When I was a kid my family and I went to the Aviation Museum of Virginia and I got a shirt that had Rosie the Riveter saying “We Can Do It” on it. For some reason my inner child was telling me to try a Rosie image and it turned out great. I got to use one of my best friends as a model and use inspiration that I loved to create a great image.
