Spit Happens

Not many people can say that they watch Alpacas for a part time job but I’m lucky that I get to that. You may be wondering how I came about such a job. Well, I had been pet sitting dogs and cats for people I knew and one day one of these people asked me if I would be interested in watering Alpacas for someone that just moved into town. Of course I said yes because the funny thing was when they said water I was thinking plants. Soon after, I released they were an animal similar to a llama. The Lady that owns them moved from Vermont and raising them helps with her weaving so she can use their fibers.

Never in a million years did I think I would be watching alpacas. The first time I took care of them I was terrified and it didn’t help that I took the grain bucket into their stall when I was going in to feed them. The job is pretty awesome except when you have to clean the stall or when they spit on you. Thankfully I’ve only have been spit on once but what was sad was it was right in my face.

It’s a pretty easy gig as well. All I have to do is make sure they have grain, fresh water, and hay twice a day. I still have trouble feeding them from time to time but that’s mainly because it’s hard to get seven alpacas to move into three different areas. I’d have to say today was one of the funniest days while I was feeding them. I was placing their bins of grain in the separate stall areas and for one of the alpacas, I was taking too long and he went between a door and gate that were chained closed to get to the others food. That would have been a great moment to capture but sadly I failed to get it.

This job beats my editing job any day of the week. I think I love it so much because it allows me to be outside and to get dirty. It takes a special kind of girl to really enjoy a job like this and I’m really glad I get to do it. I love animals of any kind and never thought I’d be face to face with an alpaca but I have been watching these guys for so long it seems like they are my pets.
