You’re Killing Me Smalls!

Headed to the Meet and Greet for Epic Internship 2013 I was super excited to use my fairly new 5D Mark II as well as meet some rad people. The meeting of the new people went great. Everyone was awesome from the start so it was easy for me not to be the shy quiet one but knowing I was coming down with a cold or some other kind of funk I wasn’t the totally somewhat spaz Erin that I’m sure Raven would have loved to meet on the first night of the internship. Shooting on the other hand wasn’t so great for me. To be thrown into a situation where I have to shoot people right away and don’t know anything about the lights being used or posing I can now say it feels like being thrown into shark infested waters without a cage. Needless to say the first set up did not go as I hoped. Raven chose a narrow hallway that was dark and my very first thought was okay a challenge I should be able to handle this. Boy was I wrong. First of all let me just say I am not what so ever comfortable shooting with speed lights on stands. Why you might ask well it’s because Erin isn’t in the know of how to use the darn things. Secondly I just could not get the correct exposure and my shutter speed was faster than the flash sync speed of my camera so I’d get this lovely black strip.

Isn’t this a lovely strip?! And I know you’re probably thinking this is not a model and I know this. I was trying to fix my issue okay!

The second set up went a whole lot better than the first and I was able to control the light better. The only problem with this one was posing the model. I usually have a planned concept before I choose a model so having no plan through me for a loop. So I tried my best to think of some emotions and have the model portray those. While doing this I was trying to keep our assignment in mind and that was to make the models look beautiful. I’d have to say this girl looks beautiful to me because if you let this side show no matter who is around you are amazing on so many levels.

Overall this was a good wake-up call and I now know I still have lots to learn about doing portrait photography. So Raven hit me with your best shot =)
